There is no brighter light than that which shines in the eyes of a child on the first snowfall of the season.
When the white, fluffy stuff falls from the sky my children are mesmerized and immediately want to suit up and go and jump in it. With their red, rosy cheeks and frozen, little fingers they can play in it for hours.
I must admit, a good snowfall energizes me too. To see the impact one change in temperature and scenery can have on their lives. The beauty and joy snow brings; that simple, wet stuff falling from the sky. It makes playing outside suddenly cool again and rather than force them to get outside for fresh air, we now have to drag them back in, to warm up and defrost.
I admit I love the snow. I get excited to go outside and shovel. I also like the way it feels falling on my face, crunching under my feet and in my hands as we pack it into balls to make a snowman.
I loved the snow until today… driving into Toronto, ON Canada in the midst of a storm when ‘BAM’ we got rear ended from behind, bumped into the other lane and then hit on the side.
Thank goodness we were all okay, but the car sure isn’t.
The driver of the car felt bad. He was clueless. Driving a rental with no snow tires… but I couldn’t stop thinking about the what if’s … thankfully we were all okay but the snow, which I used to think of as so pretty and wonderful, suddenly became scary and intimidating.
It’s amazing how things can change so quickly. How one second can change everything. One blink of an eye…
So my lesson today is… all that glitters is not always gold. Where there is good, there can be bad. Where there is beauty there can also be darkness so never take a moment for granted and always consider your perspective.
Joy doesn’t mean you need a smile plastered to your face all of the time… it means you know that whatever happens brighter days are coming.
Live in the present as after all that is our greatest gift.
On your ‘Joy Journey’ this week I challenge you to find one thing that scares you and find the good in it… not easy I know, but it is always there… for me it’s flying… I am always a wreck as the plane takes off into the air… but when I sit down and write out all of the things about an airplane ride that are good, my mindset immediately improves… an airline ride brings me to a new destination, it is a modern day wonder of how something so large can carry me through the sky, it is freeing to have the freedom to fly anywhere my heart desires, it is an opportunity not everyone can afford… it takes me to a beach vacation…. so do the same… write it out… what terrifies you, and then find the joy in it!
We’ve got this!
